It’s been 15 months since we hit our funding goal for Shaolin Nun #3, and we’re finally ready to roll out the Kickstarter for issue #4!
Why the delay? As he finished up issue #3 last year, Greg let me know he wanted to leave the book. I spent part of the summer looking for a new series penciller that was good enough to take over for Greg. Fortunately, Greg had met a very talented artist when he was part of the inaugural class of the Milestone Initiative, Tiah Ankum. I tried her out and immediately hired her!
Normally, this would have meant I could have launched a Kickstarter last year, but considering it took nine months to get the art for issue #3 completed and a book into our backers’ hands, I asked Tiah if she could draw issue #4 before I launched the Kickstarter.
Check out her amazing pencils below!
Amazing, right? It’s hard to believe that this will be her first full comic book. But as you may or may not know, I’m not independently wealthy. So I rely on the Kickstarter funds to pay my talented art team. This means I’m already in the red with Tiah’s fee, and STILL need to raise enough to pay everyone else’s fees AND print and ship rewards. So this time around, I’m asking for $7,000.00. As always, Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, so if I don’t raise the $7k, I get nothing, still owe Tiah for her work, and have to start all over again.
The great news is that because Tiah took a risk with me, you’ll wait less time from the closing of the campaign before you get a copy of the book in your hand!
I’d also like to reach that $7k sooner rather than later. For the very least to help with my mental health! Last time, we piked in just a few days before the campaign closed:
The time from September 1 to October 23, I easily put on 10 lbs from stress eating. It would be really cool to hit our funding goal in the first week, and spend the rest of the time trying to reach stretch goals. I’ve got some neat prizes lined up for every $500 we make above the initial $7K. Prizes for both digital and physical reward backers! So tell a friend, tell your family, tell total strangers to go to shaolinnun.com/kickstarter, and back the book this week!
OH! I’ll once again offer early-bird discounts on the collected editions of issues #1-#4 during the first week. I’ve also reduced the price per book from $25 to $10, at the recommendation from my awesome inker and Kickstarter master, Laurie Foster, in the hopes that it will drive more people to back us.
Now, here’s one more incentive…
I will give everyone who backs us at a physical (printed) level on our first day, January 16, a FREE Mei Yin sticker.
So don’t procrastinate! Make your pledge today!
The campaign will run from January 16 to March 1.
All four issues are available for those who have missed out on the first three Kickstarters. We’ll also have t-shirts, guest appearances, and prize bundles! Plus, add-ons after you’ve selected a reward!
