Exploitation sells

Recently, a Kickstarter project I back had this included by Kickstarter at the bottom of an update:

CA$ 111,252 pledged; 974 backers; 10 days left; Becca Boo the Bimbo Ghost #1. Is she dead? Is she alive? Is she just really, really dumb?! by Obscura Comics

CA$111,252 (now CA$114,310) is equivalent to $80,000 USD. Similar titles to Becca Boo on Kickstarter are doing just as well. “Notti & Nyce meet Red Sonja and Vampirella” has raised $43,916 from 599 backers. “Bad Girl Comics Anthology” has raised £9,933 ($11,983) from 243 backers.

Meanwhile, my book about a Buddhist nun who shaves her head, wears baggy clothing, and works to empower women is, as of this writing, currently at:

$3,136 pledged, 95 backers, 17 days left

We have a compelling story and beautiful artwork for this series, but since we aren’t flashing butts and boobs, we languish at 45% funded with just 17 days left in the campaign. Becca Boo literally has 10 times more backers than we do.

Of course, I understand that exploitation will always be there, and if you like those kinds of comics, you should be able to buy them.

However, for those who wish there were other alternatives. That there was less exploitation in comics. That they want a story about empowering women.

Where are you?

We really need your support, otherwise we won’t hit our Kickstarter goal and I won’t be able to pay my talented artists (all women) to create it. So if you’re in support of empowering rather than exploiting women, please click the link below.

Support The Shaolin Nun on Kickstarter

If you’ve already backed Shaolin Nun, please share the link to your friends, family, and total strangers who also support empowering women. And hey, if you want to back Becca Boo as well as Shaolin Nun, that’s cool, too (it can be our secret).
